In the small town where I was raised, we had children in all different, but typical scenarios at home: 2 parents, 1 Parent, divorced and remarried households. If a child who was being raised by a person other than their parent(s), it was because of a very unique reason, such as a parent’s death or adoption.
In the school I teach in now, we have an inordinate number (to me anyway) of children who are being raised by a family member other than their parents. Grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins are some examples of the family members that are raising these kids.
In a 7th grade teachers’ meeting that we had a few weeks ago, our principal discussed some of the problems with some of our students. For each of the students that we discussed, the person that we were supposed to contact was someone other than a parent. My exclamation was “Where are the parents of these children!” Maybe that was in somewhat bad taste, but I still had to ask the question. The reasons given were: prison, rehab, DHS and abandonment.
The school I teach in is not in an urban, inner-city area. My town would be considered an outlying suburb of a major city. Yet many of the issues that we have are found in these types of schools.
My big question is: “Is this the new family type- Mixed Family?”
